K9
SAR
Owner and Pro Trainer of Two Wheels Four Paws and  Garmrskyn K9, H.B is also an Independent K9 SAR handler and trainer.
Search and Rescue works on the very core level of a dogs physical abilities, it plays on their greatest asset; their nose. It's fun, its exciting, and to someone who is lost or to the loved ones of someone that is missing, its incredibly important. When a skilled and dedicated handler is paired with a driven and well trained dog, its impressive what can be accomplished. Dogs are the absolute most effective tool in finding lost people, either alive or dead.
H.B's focus is exactly that, to be the most effective means of finding someone. Just like his philosophy on training, his view on search dogs and SAR tends to be non-standard.

"I dont care about the politics of a Search group, I dont like the drama. We are here to find missing people, not play up to the group leaders to be made operational with a dog you need to make excuses for, or to be held back because your dog is better than the others. When you start trying to tell my dog how to use her damn nose when she can knock out a 90 acre search in 25 minutes while your dog gave up an hour and a half in, you lose any respect I had for you. I dont care how so-and-so does it, I dont care if you think this way is better than that way, because this person or that book said do; Like everything else, I do it my way. We find people, no excuses, nothing else." - H.B

Should you get into K9 SAR?

K9 Search and Rescue, like any SAR, is a huge commitment. Its not a weekend past time, you have to dedicate everything to the search. The training is exhausting both physically and mentally, the search is an adrenaline fueled rush akin to walking a tight rope...if you mess up someone that may have lived could die. Sometimes they die regardless. You try to maintain total control over something you cannot control. You have to deal with the assholes that are quite prevalent in the working dog world.

The payoff can be great though, if you're the right kind of person. You will have something no one else does, a true working relationship with your dog; something that will stay with you for life. You will have earned the confidence of knowing you can go anywhere and handle anything. On top of that, you are saving freakin' lives by working as one with the most incredible creature that walks, runs, pants and sniffs on this earth. If you love dogs a fair bit more than the average pet owner, love hiking, and perhaps are a bit of an adrenaline junkie, you may be the right kind of person.
Besides, once you have proven yourself as a handler and a trainer, who cares what the other assholes think!

A word of warning though, when I mention training I dont mean 15 minutes of Obedience class per week, I mean hours of repetition, miles of crawling through thickets and swamps and briars. Mud and sweat and ticks and chiggers

If you would like to get involved, or would like to join in on the training to see what it involves, feel free to contact us!
