Personal and Family Protection Dog training.

What is a Protection Dog, and Why do you need one?

A Protection Dog is a serious commitment of both time and money, but the payoff is confidence and peace of mind. I’ve heard people, even other dog trainers, claim it is unnecessary to have a trained Protection Dog, instead just go to the local shelter and pick up a tough looking Pit Bull and you’ll be safe. Why should you invest either time or money if it's really that easy? Just having a dog over 40 or 50 lbs, especially of a breed with a reputation, will deter a certain amount of criminals.

But a Deterrent Dog is not a Protection Dog, a protection dog is a dog you can trust your life to, a dog that will defend you against any and all threats. Here's the deal, someone that wants to do you harm will not be deterred. They must be neutralized. I can speak from experience here, years ago we had someone break into our house and killed our dog, who had an incredible amount of natural protective ability. But he was not a trained protection dog, and in fact we had 5 dogs over 60lbs and it did not deter the burglar.

The fact of the matter is, a mean looking dog won't protect you, you cannot rely on that dog. And if you get an ‘aggressive dog’ then you have a dog that isn’t safe, and still isn’t likely to neutralize the threat.

Who is a good candidate for a Protection Dog?

First off, you have to be responsible. I will not put a dog in the hands of someone who I think may put the dog in a situation that could have easily been avoided. If it is not necessary for your dog to engage, if you could have easily avoided or left the situation, but you would still feel the need to use your dog…you would not be a good candidate. Think of the dog as a firearm, and use them accordingly. If you are responsible and committed to protecting yourself, your family, your home, then you are who I consider a good candidate.

What is considered a suitable dog?

As far as the dogs go, I am very selective of what dogs I train as Protection Dogs. If you are supplying the dog, I need to evaluate the dog to make sure they are mentally and physically prepared for training. Ideal Canine Candidates are at least 18 months old, of sound temperament, good socialization, physically sound and capable, and possess the proper drives. I can build a dog up but they have to possess the right traits to build upon.

I can source and provide the proper dog for you, obviously the price of said dog is added to the cost of training and you have to be ready to take on a serious working dog. The end results will be better performance wise, but of course sometimes your situation doesn’t allow for this.

Why choose us?

There are a lot of other training companies out there, that is true, and some are very good…but most aren’t. Most ‘Protection Dog” trainers are simply giving you a Schutzhund or KNPV dog. A Sport Dog, a dog who has only worked in prey drive and is playing a game, as soon as it becomes real that dog will not perform. Others create trigger-happy monsters, oh they will bite and fight a criminal…and your neighbors and kids and anyone else than comes around.

You should choose us because we are passionate about what we do, having suffered the consequences of an untrained dog that wasn’t prepared for what happened, we intend for your dog to be trained and experienced for anything. I, the trainer, am not content until I myself am willing to trust my life and family to the dog. I seek perfection in the art of dog training, even more so in the field of protection and apprehension dogs. Lives are at stake here, both of the handler and the handler’s family and the dog. The handlers need to be able to rely entirely on that dog to protect them.
